Charlize a UN peace messenger?

Monday, 17 November 2008, at 10:50

Charlize Theron is overrated. And while she can sometimes pull off a convincing South African accent, she possesses a strange way of making males feel lousy for being born with a penis. Nevertheless, the United Nations recently named her a Messenger Of Peace. Whatever that is.

Which is a fitting title, since South Africa is a peaceful country.

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Oscar-winning South African-born actress Charlize Theron was named a United Nations messenger of peace on Friday, with a special focus on ending violence against women.

Messengers of peace, of which there will now be 10, are celebrities mainly from the fields of film, music, literature and sport who are charged with promoting U.N. activities and ideals through public appearances and media contacts.

Keeping within the spirit of epic profiling, I reckon that the World Health Organisation should name Nigella the Messenger Of Peas.

I would totally support that.

Amandzing - I don’t understand what you mean ……

I do think she’s overrated, though - but face it, she’s a lovely girl, very pretty and very sweet. I bear her no ill will - but what on earth did she do to become a peace messenger???????

That she felt all warm and fuzzy towards SA?
Don’t we all when we live away from home?

I agree with Coba! I do think she is pretty and sweet…but surely you need to do more than just star in a film that depicts the horror of violence against women to be nominated as a peace messenger!

Can anyone tell me what she did to “gain” this title? I mean the horror of violence against women is very real (speaking from experience!) and surely if she made such a difference to earn this title that it would have been in the press??!! :???:

give her a break tjaainas. it’s not like its her fault her mommy shot her daddy

According to the news, she was a victim of domestic violence (jip de doo) and she openly condemns abuse againste women in South Africa as well as our rape crisis that has gives us the highest figures in the world.

    And … ?

come on guys, charlie is awesome! I think its great someone was chosen for being intelligent, internationally recognised and influencial. Also, for south africa its not very often the hobknobs are beautiful to look at.

  7. 7 jacoba

    Intelligent???????

she won an oscar for her acting, which rates her in my book. if she can use her access to the media to highlight issues, why not? it’s not as if anyone else is having wonderful success…

hey, Charlize is cool. Did you know she has been involved in Women’s and Animal rights organisations? Her and partner Stuart say they won’t marry until gay marriages are legal across all US states. She is also an active PETA member. I think the girl has some brains to have got this far. All she needs to do now is adopt a kid and she can can be our own Angelina.

  10. 10 sicovit

How does refusing to get married until gay marriages are legal make her smart?

hey Jeremy, I’m ot techno fundi. I want to send you a pic but how? I don’t know your email address and the email on Contact Me won’t let me attach a pic. I feel really stupid but please help.

It doesn’t make her smart but it shows she gets involved which is why the UN chose her. I’m just saying she has some smarts to have got where she is and has an opinion on situations. I’ve read a few interviews with her and the girl is not just a pretty face. She may not be Einstein but most people aren’t.

Amandzing has a point - she did win an Oscar, she is intelligent and she DOES get attention.
Think about it: what’s needed is someone that can (and will) demand attention. She CAN do it.

  14. 14 amandzing

    YES she CAN!

sicovit, it may not make her smart, but it makes her many fans. if one has to be cold-blooded about it, she may just be doing it for the money. but it highlights an issue which is dear to many, and whether or not her reasons are mercenary, it makes her more real, and in touch with some of the realities out there. and that makes her a smartie (say in scots accent) in my book.

I am wondering why you think she lacks intelligence.
Granted she’s blonde; yes she’s female; she spent her adolescent years on the catwalks of the world becoming the top model she is. Jacoba I am sure you can attest to being able to break the mould and end up intellectual.
She went into movies and got very close to Woody Allen. I would think his mentoring must have meant that he saw intellect. OK so he did have an issue with his stepdaughter but he is probably the most intellectual comedian of our age.
I see no problem with her being recognised for things other than her magnificent physical attributes as she matures.
But Jeremy I agree with you on Nigella - good looking cooks turn me on too!

    Hey guys

Been a moer of a long time since i posted here. My 5 cents worth:
I’m not a fan of theron’s. No doubt she’s talented (deservedly won the oscar), beautiful, charming blah blah blah….BUT when the anti-rape advert she did came out here some years ago I happened to be one of those men that took offense.
How many of you guys here remember that advert?

    Peace

Frankly, in this day and age, money is money. I don’t believe there is one person on this forum that doesn’t give a damn about money, even if only to a lesser extent.

Mmmmm - being labelled an intellectual, more often than not, sucks and being cursed with an enquiring mind isn’t that much easier.

However, I do have a problem with being pre-judged and considered to be something that I am not - I am sure she hates it too…….

  18. 18 jacoba

    Sir Dude,

Why on earth were you offended??????? It didn’t apply to you - why did you wear the cap? I don’t freak every time somebody runs down the Afrikaner, nor do I hide the fact. I just know that (usually) it doesn’t apply to me. So why did you take offence??

  19. 19 Ri

small-minded eejits; what does it matter whether she rates or not?! Is Madiba intelligent? Who cares - he’s one of the greatest statesmen who ever lived and he’s from SOUTH AFRICA! Charlize is one of the better actresses out there and she’s from SOUTH AFRICA!

Aren’t you proud of South Africans doing well and putting us in a positive light? :???:

  20. 20 kakstorie

Ri dont forget our first space traveller ,Mark Shuttleworth , he is also from South Africa. He also got no award.

  21. 21 jacoba

He got a couple of billion and went out into space ……. I’d prefer that.

  22. 22 The Dude

The more important question here is would you kick her out the bed if she farted? Being an absolute gentelman I for one would not

  23. 23 The Dude

Unless she was still filming monster

  24. 24 sir dude alot

    LOL @ The dude

Jacoba i was offended by being put in the same box as rapists. The way i perceived it, was her saying if you’re a south african woman your chances of being raped are exponentially higher than getting a decent education…ok fine no problems with that statement.
However, she also said that SA men do not take any responsibility when it comes to rape and those sitting by doing nothing are just as guilty. I dont recall the exact words but I got pissed off by it. She might as well have been a saffa staying in the UK or Aus, bitching about SA crime and essentially doing 4kol about it aside from perpetuating stereotypes.

Great actress. But thats about it in my books.
Oh and as for kicking her out of bed if she farts…lets give ourselves some perspective with an age old quote: “Show me a beautiful woman and i’ll show you a man….. ” you know the rest

    Peace guys
    l8r

  25. 25 sir dude alot

    Hey Ri

Hmmm…..yes i actually do happen to think that statesmen should be intelligent.
As for putting south africans in a positive light, theron’s advert back then didnt do that so i have to disagree with you there as well.

Ag well i dont even know why i’m harping on this…I must have issues with outspoken women or something. Anybody know if discovery health covers counselling? Those bastards probably only have psych doctors that advertise their services exclusively on pamphlets in Claremont main road…”we make woman love man, increase penis make long love, help woman be pregnant”

  26. 26 Grey

What she said in the advert was simply telling it as it is. There is absolutely no doubt that sexual and physical abuse of women is a serious problem in our country. There are too many men in South Africa who believe that women are their Chattels and they can do as they like with them. There are also far too few men who will stand up and take on the abusers. If we are talking about you here then I ask you try another cap and stand up and be counted.
If we want South africa to be seen in a positive light we should not be hiding all the warts as though they don’t exist and we should be fighting these blights on our national character.
If being an ambassador for peace means she tells it like it is until we actually take notice then she is the right person.
And she can fart in my bed any night

  27. 27 sir dude alot

    Sup Grey

I see you what you saying, my point is….how do you/theron know that I don’t volunteer at Lifeline and help out with organising the neighbourhood watch in my area? I’m also taking a part time course in victim-counseling plan to use that soon enough.

So then…i am not one of those men that believes women are chattels. I’m also not someone that’s not doing anything about it.

I’m not so much into ‘making south africa be seen in a positive light’ ….i’m trying to help fix the actual problems. Maybe using a celebrity to make people pay attention can work, but my point is…..i’m DOING something, not sitting and complaining about it.

I just disagree with the message the advert was conveying. And yes, i would no doubt allow her to fart in my bed….but something tells me she’s not on a blogging page right now contemplating whether she’d allow me to fart in hers. So what’s the point.

  28. 28 Grey

    Yo Sir Dude
Haven’t seen enough of your posts to have been able to decide where you stood or what you did. Now I know you’re a doer your posts make a lot more sense.
I think what the ad was trying to say was if your best friend donders his stuk every friday night you and I should be sorting him out and this doesn’t happen in too many instances. Not you or me who probably do (and get dondered by the stuk for interfering) but the macho inbreds out there. And maybe some of the inbreds actually listened because she is such a folk hero. But then again she’s too blonde for a big section of the perps.
