I’ve been nominated for an award.
Saturday, 23 August 2008, at 13:10Yesterday, I received a call to say that my editorial cartoon, Ditwits, has been nominated for Most Outstanding Cartoon in the South African Comedy Awards 2008. By default, I’m at a disadvantage because the guys who I’m up against are proficient and a whole lot more experienced than I am. They are Zapiro, and the Sowetan’s Sifiso Yalo.
It really came as a surprise. So much so, in fact, that I couldn’t remember which strips had been submitted, since I deleted the said folder a few weeks ago, realising that the competition is probably too strong for someone who has been drawing editorially for under a year.
As of typing this, I have no idea exactly which cartoons the judges reviewed. But, by golly, I’m determined to get to the bottom of it.
According to the official website,
[t]he 2008 Awards ceremony will take place on Monday the 8th September at the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town and will once again be hosted by a glittering array of local and international comedians and celebrities. The ceremony be filmed and broadcast prime time Saturday the 13 September 2008 on SABC2.
Thankfully, I’ve got a bit of time to figure things out.

Congrats, well deserved! The mere fact that you were nominated, is praise enough, J - but how can you shrink in the presence of the greats? You are as great, have as much talent (if not more) - only less experience!
It takes only one cartoon to recognize the talent, remember that. In the investigation afterwards they will find the rest.

Jeremy, you are clearly a ‘Mover and shaker in his own league’ (trophy or no trophy),
Clearly, there’s no need to be beating yourself into submission, solely based on the fact that you are the new kid on the block, if anything, it can be used to one’s advantage.
It was just a matter of time before this kind of acknowledgement made its appearance on your ’stoep’.
